PRESS RELEASE

JK Gallery is delighted to announce an exhibition of Drawings by California artist Malaika Zweig. This will be her first exhibition in Los Angeles with JK Gallery.

The flow of water, inside the body and surrounding the body, and the invisible spaces we call air or imagination are the subject of this series.  A quick run or a slow tip-toe are stories of a chase.  Inside the body opens out to an infinite landscape.  The flight of birds, the rush of a flock in the air, and the flightless birds stuck on land remind us of our attachment to the earth.  The invisible, imagined spaces, like floating helium balloons release us.
Sometimes there are moments when you find such parallels in life’s stories and images that all you can do is laugh and feel happy to be connected to people.

Malaika Zweig

The New Works of Malaika explore personal memory and waking dreams. Her work bridges the traditional with the contemporary mind and shares intentions of reinvigorating the figurative tradition with humor, fear and the erotic inner body.

Malaika Zweig currently lives and works in Los Angeles.  She received her Bachelor of Fine Art from the California College of the Arts in the Bay Area (1999) and her Master of Fine Art from Massachusetts College of Art in Boston (2005).  Zweig has exhibited her art on both coasts and abroad since 1997 and her work is held in private collections in Boston, Cambridge, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. She had her last solo exhibition in Paris at L’Atelier de la Main d’Or (2006).
