PRESS RELEASE
JK Gallery is excited to present the work of Jane Catlin in her first exhibition in Los Angeles, running running from january 10 to february 14. Based in Utah, Catlin mixes organic and inorganic imagery in an investigation of the impact of rising population growth and industrialization on the environment. This synthesis of forms reflects the complexity of nature's processes and the interconnected struggle to survive against the rapidly-changing landscape and climate. Catlin energetically renders these phenomena with paint, pencil, and crayon on mylar and linen, simultaneously revealing and obscuring biological adaptations.
The delicate and whimsical use of color in Catlin's works on mylar conveys a sense of wonder at the activities of earth's organisms while the darker crayon on linen pieces present a more sinister outlook. Despite these contrasting perspectives, Catlin aims for her work to illustrate her eager and inquisitive observations of environmental change.
Jane Catlin received her MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1989 and is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Utah State University. She has exhibited internationally and throughout the United States. |
